How to Differentiate Between Normal Shedding and Excessive Hair Loss
We all shed hair daily as part of the natural growth cycle, about 50 - 100 hairs a day. But how can you tell when shedding becomes excessive? Knowing the difference can help you act quickly to prevent further loss. As a Certified Trichologist, I’ll guide you through identifying the signs and share a VERY personal story.
Signs of Excessive Hair Loss:

Thinning Hair: Noticeable reduction in volume or widening of your part.

Bald Patches: Small areas where hair is missing entirely.

Increased Shedding: Large clumps of hair on your pillow, in your shower, or on your brush.

A study in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology highlights that hair shedding exceeding 200 hairs per day often indicates conditions like telogen effluvium.

Hairline Changes: Receding hairlines or thinning edges are telltale signs.
My Shedding Battle Before My Wedding and During Illness
There were two times in my life when hair shedding felt like a dramatic event. The first was a months before my wedding—classic, right? Between planning every little detail and stressing over guest lists, decor, menus and more, I noticed more hair in the shower drain than usual. It was mostly falling from my temples, and I joked that I was shedding stress along with strands! It was a little alarming, but with everything going on, I didn’t have time to dwell on it. Looking back, I realized it was my body’s way of reminding me to slow down, even during such an exciting time.
The second time was during a nasty bout of bronchitis. I was up coughing all night for days on end, completely drained. It wasn’t until I started recovering that I noticed my ponytail looking thinner, and the shedding seemed worse at the back of my head. It turns out, illness and stress can knock your hair’s natural growth cycle out of sync. Both times were classics cases of Telogen Effluvium:
Telogen Effluvium is a temporary condition where excessive hair shedding occurs due to stress, illness or other disruptions that push more hair follicles into the resting (telogen) phase of the hair growth cycle. This type of hair loss we typically see hair come right back from 6 to 9 months after the onset stressor. If not, they're more than likely is another underlying cause.

Shedding Myths: Humans Are Not Trees

Hair shedding is influenced by the natural hair growth cycle—anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (shedding)—rather than external seasonal changes.

A study published in Dermatology Practical & Conceptual found that while some individuals may notice slight seasonal variations in shedding, these fluctuations are minor and are typically tied to individual hair cycles rather than environmental factors.
- These "seasonal sheddings" are most likely linked to a change in diet, vitamin D depletion, hormonal changes, stress or a change in the home's atmosphere such as the AC or heater going on or off - affecting the skin of the scalp. Certain aspects change in our environment that impact our hair - but hair loss is never caused simply by the change of season.
What Should You Do?
If you notice these signs, it’s essential to address the issue early. Begin by evaluating potential triggers, such as stress, diet, or health conditions, and consult a professional if needed. Ask your doctor to get blood levels checked to see if there is a nutrient deficiency or hormonal imbalance. Find ways to find peace in your life, even when going through a difficult time. Reaching out to a friend, going to church, listening to peaceful music, vigorous exercising, taking walks in nature and eating an anti-inflammatory diet are some examples of day to day stress management.

Thank you for this post, I’ve learned so much from you since I started using your products. I’ve noticed a lot less shedding in the shower and in my brush, even my husband has noticed since he was the one to always pick the hairs off the back of my clothes.
