How to Get Thicker Hair Naturally

Thick, luscious hair is often seen as a sign of vitality and beauty. Understanding the factors that influence hair density, thickness and implementing effective strategies can make a significant difference. As a certified Trichologist, I'm here to guide you through the process. Let's first understand the difference between thickness and density:

Hair Thickness vs. Hair Density: Know the Difference

Many confuse hair thickness with hair density, but they’re not the same!

Hair Thickness – The diameter of each strand (fine, medium, or coarse). Genetics determines this, and it cannot be changed.

Hair Density – The number of hair strands per square inch of your scalp. This can be improved with proper care!

I personally have very fine (thin) hair, so when I experienced hair loss, it was much more noticeable. Since my hair strands were already thin, losing density made my hair look even sparser. While I will never have thick, coarse strands due to my genetics, I focused on increasing my hair density—and the results were amazing!

If you also have fine hair, don’t feel bad! Embrace your natural hair type and work on keeping your hair as full and healthy as possible. Instead of trying to change your strand thickness, focus on density, scalp health, and strengthening your existing hair.

Study Insight: A 2019 review in the Dermatology and Therapy journal highlighted the importance of micronutrients in hair follicle development and immune cell function, emphasizing that deficiencies can contribute to hair loss.

Factors Influencing Hair Thickness and Density:

  1. Genetics: Your genetic makeup plays a pivotal role in determining hair thickness. While you can't change your genes, you can optimize other factors to improve hair health.

  2. Diet and Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals is essential for healthy hair growth. Nutrient deficiencies can lead to thinning hair.

  3. Scalp Health: A healthy scalp provides a conducive environment for hair growth. Issues like dandruff or excessive oil can impede hair density.

  4. Hair Care Practices: Overstyling, excessive heat, and harsh chemicals can damage hair strands, leading to breakage and thinning.

Natural Strategies to Enhance Hair Denisty:

  1. Maintain a Nutrient-Rich Diet:

    • Proteins: Hair is primarily made of keratin, a type of protein. Ensure adequate protein intake through foods like legumes, nuts, lean meats or eggs.
    • Vitamins and Minerals: Incorporate foods rich in vitamins A, C, D, E, and minerals like zinc and iron. Leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and fruits are excellent sources.
    • Study Insight: A 2019 review in the Dermatology and Therapy journal highlighted the importance of micronutrients in hair follicle development and immune cell function, emphasizing that deficiencies can contribute to hair loss.
  2. Scalp Care:

    • Regular Cleansing: Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to keep the scalp clean without damaging the skin.
    • Scalp Massage: Massaging the scalp can stimulate blood circulation, promoting nutrient delivery to hair follicles.
    • Exfoliation: Periodic scalp exfoliation can remove dead skin cells and product buildup, fostering a healthier environment for hair growth.
  3. Gentle Hair Handling:

    • Limit Heat Styling: Reduce the use of heat tools like blow dryers and straighteners. When necessary, use a heat protectant spray.
    • Avoid Tight Hairstyles: Styles that pull on the hair shaft can cause traction alopecia. Opt for loose hairstyles to prevent stress on hair follicles.
  4. Natural Topical Treatments:

    • Emunah Beauty Hair & Scalp Oil

      • Balances Scalp Microbiome: Maintains a healthy scalp environment, crucial for hair density.
      • Contains Natural DHT Blockers: Helps prevent hair thinning associated with hormonal factors.
    • Minoxidil: Works by increasing blood flow to the scalp, prolonging the hair growth phase (anagen phase), stimulating dormant hair follicles to encourage regrowth and can improve hair density over time. One major side effect is shedding in the first few weeks, as weaker hairs are pushed out to make way for new growth.
  5. Stress Management:

    • Chronic stress can disrupt the hair growth cycle. Engage in relaxation techniques. Hiking, walks outside, workouts or deep-breathing exercises can manage stress levels.

Love your blogs ! Thanks much

Sai

How to properly apply the hair & scalp oil and massage the scalp with long hair?

Should it be apply to entire scalp or only areas with thinning hair?

Some videos and/or pictures on applying the oil, massaging and exfoliating the scalp would be great!

Thanks for the blogs!

Sandy

I have most of the same questions that Mary Ann posed. I know how often to shampoo and condition. But more details on frequency, time length, and how to massage and exfoliate the scalp would be great!

Kim

Love your blog! Really happy you pass on so much great information regarding hair.

Regarding scalp care:
How many times a week should we be: shampooing our hair? Massaging our scalp? and exfoliating our scalp?

Do we do all of these in the shower only?

Should scalp massages be with our fingers? How long should we massage?

What do we use to exfoliate our scalp? Is there a time limit?

Thanks for your help.
