Is My Hair Loss Reversible, and What Treatments Are Available?

If you’re experiencing hair loss, the first question on your mind is likely, “Is it reversible?” This is the question I asked myself when I experienced hair loss for the first time. I was very scared. I took this question to my doctor who gave me the very unfortunate answer of.. "No.."

I was in my early twenties when I first developed alopecia. It was a bald spot on the top of my head. When I heard that initial response from the doctor, I felt that all hope inside of me was lost. That's when I began to research online and discovered I wasn't alone. That hair loss IS common - and CAN be reversible. That big "NO" from my doctor actually just meant, "Although I'm a doctor and you put your trust in me, I just don't personally have the tools or am I motivated to help you. Good luck.."

😒 ...

The good news is that many types of hair loss can be treated effectively, especially when addressed early. I hope you can now see why I became obsessed with hair loss and decided to pursue the study of it as my career and passion in life. As a Certified Trichologist, I’ve helped countless women understand their options and take control of their hair health.

Types of Hair Loss and Their Treatments:

  1. Reversible Hair Loss: Conditions like telogen effluvium (caused by stress, the flu, post surgery or nutritional deficiencies) or postpartum hair loss often improve when the underlying trigger is resolved.

    • A 2019 study in the International Journal of Trichology found that nutritional supplementation and stress management can significantly improve cases of telogen effluvium.

  2. Hormonal Hair Loss: This includes menopausal hair loss, post partum hair loss or going on or off birth control for example. Treatments like minoxidil, spironolactone, or hormone therapy may be recommended by healthcare professionals. However, I strongly advise you to work with a hormonal specialist to take control of the root cause. This method is always going to bring you more sustainable hair growth in the long run.

  3. Autoimmune Hair Loss: Conditions like alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder where the body attacks its own hair follicles, often require specialized treatments. Options include corticosteroid injections, topical immunotherapy, or PRP therapy.

    • A study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation demonstrated that JAK inhibitors, an emerging treatment for autoimmune hair loss, could effectively promote regrowth in patients with alopecia areata.

  4. Genetic Hair Loss: Over the years, we have gained an incredibly deeper understanding as to WHY we lose hair due to genetics, therefore we now have better methods to combat this type of hair loss. Hereditary hair thinning, known as androgenetic alopecia, can be managed with treatments like  DHT blockers, lasers (LLLT,) minoxidil, finasteride, or natural solutions to slow its progression and promote regrowth.

    • Research from the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology emphasizes the importance of early intervention to maximize treatment outcomes for androgenetic alopecia.

Great article. Knowing hair loss can be reversible is a game changer. It gives me hope. I purchased the derma stamp. Once I receive it I’ll be able to begin my oil treatments. Thank you. Mary Ann

Very informative. Love reading your new blog! Would love one on scalp/skin conditions. Seasonal irritation vs. more serious conditions like psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, etc. Thank you so much for sharing this info.

I was diagnosed with Lupus years ago and within the last 2 to 3 years I am bald in the top of my head. It looks like I have male baldness. A dermatologist told me that it probably wouldn’t grow back because there are bald shiny spots up there. I have spent a lot of money trying to regrow my hair and nothing has worked. Please advise
