What Causes Hair Loss in Women?
Hair loss can be a distressing experience for women, impacting confidence and overall well-being. While it’s normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs daily, noticeable thinning or excessive shedding often signals an underlying issue. As a certified trichologist, I’m here to break down the most common causes of hair loss in women.
Common Causes of Hair Loss in Women:
-
Genetics: Hereditary hair loss, or androgenetic alopecia, is the most common cause of hair thinning in women. It typically results in diffuse thinning across the scalp.
-
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 40% of women experience some degree of hair thinning by age 50, often due to genetics.
-
-
Hormonal Changes: Life events such as pregnancy, menopause, and conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can trigger hair loss due to fluctuating hormone levels.
-
Medical Conditions: Autoimmune diseases like alopecia areata, thyroid disorders, and anemia can lead to temporary or permanent hair loss.
-
Stress: Both physical and emotional stress can cause a condition called telogen effluvium, where more hairs enter the shedding phase.
-
Nutritional Deficiencies: A lack of essential nutrients like iron, biotin, and vitamin D can weaken hair and cause increased shedding.

Love your hair oil!
I took your advice and had labs done. All labs were normal: hormones, thyroid, folate, iron, magnesium, etc.
Minoxidil and four rounds of plasma injections over the last three years. No change.
Post menopause. Been taking nutrafol for 6 months. I also use your oil and hair stamper. I’m just at a loss as to where to turn next. So much thinning on top and crown.
